March 14 is Pi Day - A Fun Idea for Family Activities

Pi Day

Pi Day

Any good excuse for a fun family day or activity is worth some personal attention.   A few years ago, my oldest son got wind of Pi Day. It is celebrated each March 14 (think 3.14) to recognize and teach about the mathematical term Pi.  As you may remember, Pi is defined as the relationship between a circle’s diameter and its circumference.  You can calculate the circumference of a circle by multiplying its diameter by Pi (which is approximately 3.1415926535.  If you know the diameter of a circle, you can also calculate its area by squaring the radius of the circle and multiplying by Pi.  One of the most fun things about Pi is that it has an infinite number of digits after the 3.14 and there is no real pattern.

Anyway, Pi is a cool thing and March 14 is a good way to celebrate this critical math and geometry concept.  What can you do to celebrate Pi Day?

  • You can create your own games about ways to use Pi, or you can put some problems on cards and have your kids solve them using Pi.   Of you can try this Pi Day quiz online.
  • You can run, jog, walk or bicycle Pi miles together as a family
  • You can bake and eat a Pi(e) or you can make cookies and decorate them with the Pi symbol
  • You can look up your phone number in the Pi digits--it will be there somewhere.
  • See who can memorize the most digits of Pi.  There are over one million on this site.

Anyway, Pi Day is a fun opportunity to learn and have fun together as a family!  Take advantage!
