Men hide behind an injunction and it's the girl who winds up getting hated. It is unfair

Gags aren't funny ... Divine Brown is not a fan of injunctions
THE rich and famous men who hide behind super-injunctions while leaving their lovers to hang out to dry have been slammed - by a woman who should know.
Divine Brown, the LA hooker who infamously got caught performing a sex act on actor Hugh Grant, said:"Getting an injunction and hiding their own name while the women get slandered is just terrible. The case of Big Brother beauty Imogen Thomas - who is being publicly abused for her fling with married Ryan Giggs - has further fuelled Divine's rage. Imogen, 28, is powerless to put her full side of the story because of a super-injunction taken out by the footballer.
Divine added: "These days women like Imogen should stand up for themselves. We have to take all the heat and the men act like we don't exist.
"Next thing you know we've got hate mail, we're liars. It'sjust straight-up bulls**t. We don't want our names shamed and slandered.
"I'd tell Imogen to hang in there, be strong. Hopefully one day we can meet and talk because I understand what she's going through. "My heart goes out to her. Stay strong, sweet girl - and be more careful who you fall in love with.
"I believe when you've been busted, stand up and be counted.Own up and take responsibility." However, Imogen's case is very different to Divine and Grant's and there is no suggestion whatsoever that Imogen was ever involved in prostitution.

Ryan Giggs drama goes to show in social media.

IT had been a hell of a week for one of Manchester United’s most celebrated players, Ryan Giggs. Hitherto often portrayed as a family man, Giggs had earlier obtained a super injunction to keep his alleged six-month extra-marital affair with 28-year-old reality TV star Imogen Thomas secret. Of course, last week saw it become the world’s most revealed secret.
With the super injunction in force, neither Thomas nor the media could reveal or even mention the Premier League star’s name. (A super injunction is a temporary injunction which restrains a person from publishing private or confidential information concerning the applicant or informing others of the existence of such injunction and the courtproceedings.) But this had not impressed the Wild West of social media because by May 21, tens of thousands of Twitter users had already tweeted and re-tweeted Giggs’ name. This is by far the biggest act of mass civil disobedience onthe Internet, making a mockery of the court order. Needless to say, Britain’s feral and sanctimonious media were not amused at all, as it did not make sense to them that they could still be gagged from publishing something which is already an open secret on Twitter. Even British Prime Minister David Cameron weighed in, describing the privacy law of Britain as no longer sustainable in this age of social media since everybodyalready knew the footballer’sidentity.

The Church That Oprah Winfrey Built - NYTimes.com

“The Oprah Winfrey Show” ended Wednesday, bringing despair to booksellers who relied on her book club, television programmers who needed her ratings, and religion scholars who for a decade have tried explaining how this child of poverty became the leader of a worldwide cult. They have worked just as hard to define that cult, which is at once Christian and pantheistic, African-American in origin but global in reach.

The scholars found conflicting sources of Ms. Winfrey’s spirituality. It began, but definitely does not end, with the black church of her youth. In her 2003 book, “Oprah Winfrey and the Glamour of Misery,” Eva Illouz, a sociologist, quotes Ms. Winfrey as saying: “Since I was three and a half, I’ve been coming up in the church speaking. I did all of the James Weldon Johnson sermons” — Mr. Johnson being the poet whose “God’s Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse” was published in 1927. “I used to do them for churches all over the city of Nashville,” Ms. Winfrey said.

Dr. Illouz, who teaches at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, found that elements of the black church, like its emotionality and focus on justice, “pervade ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show,’ which has taken on the vocation of relieving a multiplicity of forms of suffering through the use of speech infused with the rhetorical style of black preachers.”

While respecting Ms. Winfrey’s use of her Christian heritage, Dr. Illouz ultimately concluded that the talk-show host might be something of a false prophet. That is because, she said, Ms. Winfrey and her cadre of self-help experts treated suffering as something beneficial. Ms. Winfrey turned the black church’s ethos of self-reliance in the face of suffering into an exaltation of suffering itself.

“By making all experiences of suffering into occasions to improve oneself,” Dr. Illouz wrote, “Oprah ends up — absurdly — making suffering into a desirable experience.”

And if, as Ms. Winfrey’s teachings suggest, strong women “can always transcend failure by the alchemy of their own will and of therapy, then people have only themselves to blame for their misery,” Dr. Illouz said.

Ms. Winfrey has religious antecedents besides the black church. Kathryn Lofton argues in her new book, “Oprah: The Gospel of an Icon,” that to understand Ms. Winfrey it helps to know Charles Grandison Finney, the great antebellum evangelist.

Tampa Bay Lightning's Blair Jones gets to 'live the dream' - St. Petersburg Times

Tampa Bay Lightning's Blair Jones gets to 'live the dream'BOSTON — Lightning C Blair Jones said it sunk in a little bit Thursday night, the eve of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final. Jones, 24, who spent most of the season with AHL Norfolk, was preparing for a playoff game with a berth in the Stanley Cup final on the line. "It's just pretty amazing," he said before Friday's game. "You talk about living the dream. It's pretty wild." During a season in which Jones strived to find consistency at the NHL level, dressing for just 18 games, he made some significant strides. So much so that with LW Sean Bergenheim (lower-body injury) missing his second straight game, Jones was put in the lineup for the seventh time this postseason. While Jones knows he can't replicate Bergenheim's production (nine playoff goals) or chemistry with linemates, the physical 6-foot-2, 216-pounder has tried to do the little things. "He's working so hard. He's a warrior, and we knew that," Lightning coach Guy Boucher said. "But I think he's maintained the level of play that we're expecting out of him, and he's brought a lot of grit. He's one of those guys that's got enough skill, got enough grit and pays the price. He backchecks extremely well and finishes his check and is first on the puck. It's a great recipe to have a good playoffs." Jones entered averaging 6:01 of ice time in the playoffs but Friday played 7:17 in the first two periods alone. He said the physical nature and one-on-one battles in the playoffs fit his style well. "What I like about (Jones) is that he likes the challenges," Boucher said. "He's on the bench and looking at me with those eyes, 'Put me on. I'll do the job.' It's always fun to have those guys." MEDICAL MATTERS: Bergenheim, who entered Friday second in the playoffs in goals, appeared close to returning. He made some improvements since suffering the injury in the first period of Game 5 and participated in the optional morning skate and warmups before Game 7 even though Boucher considered him "doubtful." Boucher pointed out what impact Bergenheim's absence has made. "When you look at the Bruins' depth, it does make a difference because instead of equalizing things, it tends to give them a little upper hand on that because they've got (Tyler) Seguin on their third line and (Michael) Ryder," Boucher said. "And (Chris) Kelly is doing really well. "And they've got (Rich) Peverley, a first-line guy (for the Thrashers this season), on their fourth line. And that's where Bergenheim became extremely important for us in the previous series and this series where the line with (RW Steve) Downie and (C Dominic) Moore played like a first line." PIECE OF PUZZLE: The Bruins tried a few things to spark their power play, which entered Friday 5-for-61 (8.2 percent) in the playoffs. MISCELLANY: Friday was Lightning G Dwayne Roloson's 50th career playoff appearance and No. 70 for Lightning D Mattias Ohlund. Blue Angels commander steps down after subpar performance - CNN.com

(CNN) -- The commander of the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels stepped down Friday in the wake of a subpar performance at a Virginia air show this week.

"I performed a maneuver that had an unacceptably low minimum altitude. This maneuver, combined with other instances of not meeting the airborne standard that makes the Blue Angels the exceptional organization that it is, led to my decision to step down," Cmdr. Dave Koss said in a statement, referring to the Lynchburg, Virginia, Regional Airshow.

He will be replaced by Capt. Greg McWherter, who was the flight demonstration team's previous commander.

Air shows have been in the spotlight recently because of concerns over safety.

A pilot performing stunts in an east Florida air show in March died in a fiery crash when the Russian military plane he was flying in broke formation and fell to the ground.

Also in March, engine trouble at an air show in Texas caused a plane to plummet, leaving a white trail behind as it dove toward a wooded area. The two stunt pilots onboard survived.

The Blue Angels have canceled performances at the Rockford, Illinois, Airfest June 4-5 and the Evansville, Indiana, Freedom Festival Air Show June 11-12 because of the shakeup in leadership.

Boston Bruins win East, face Vancouver Canucks for Stanley Cup

Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals was not pond hockey, as had been played a few times by the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins in previous clashes. It was gritty, tough, "Hey ref, let the guys play" hockey whose resilience was as clear as the blood on Steven Stamkos's(notes) face.

The kind of hockey where one mistake changes everything, as it did in the Bruins' 1-0 win over the Lightning. The Bruins advance to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Vancouver Canucks. It's Boston's first battle for the Cup since losing in 1990.

The Bruins are seeking their sixth Stanley Cup and first since 1972.

That mistake came in the form of a Lightning defensive breakdown at 12:27 of the third period, asDavid Krejci(notes) sent the puck to Nathan Horton(notes), who finally solved Tampa goalie Dwayne Roloson(notes):

It's been quite a journey for Horton in his first playoffs, coming to Boston last summer in a trade from theFlorida Panthers.

He scored a double-OT game winner against the Montreal Canadiens in the quarterfinals, scored the OT game winner in Game 7 against the Habs, and had a three-point game in Game 2 against the Lightning. And while it went unmentioned by the NHL's TV rights-holders on Friday night, he had a water bottle incident with a fan in Tampa Bay after Game 6 that, under different circumstances, could have cost him a suspension. But not with a trip to the Cup Finals on the line; in fact, Horton became the first player in NHL history to have two Game 7 game-winners in the same playoffs.

Texts from last night: Canucks in the Stanley Cup Final edition!

Photo

One of the best parts of being a fan is getting to share the rare triumphs of your team with people you care about, whether those be fellow fans, family, friends, or other loved ones. I always appreciate how my friends show support for the Canucks when they do well, and console me when they don't. Often after a big win, I will end up in a texting storm for about 15 minutes as I revel in the victory with friends, whether they are diehards like me or just excited on my behalf.

Last night was no exception to this trend, as before, during, and after the game, I shared the experience with friends via text. After the jump, a review of my texts from last night as the Canucks advance to the Stanley Cup Final. Apparently such an occasion brings out a lot of WOOOOOOs, TYPING IN CAPS, and multiple exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!

Margaritaville Goes Virtual and Twitter Gets in Trouble

Jimmy Buffett fans can go directly to Margaritaville now thanks to the musical artist himself and game developer THQ. On a free-to-play online social game, Margaritaville Online will let users build a boat as well as a bar. Players can also earn virtual currency to buy “booty” and customize their games by spending real money. Buffett appears to be banking off his one-hit wonder which has since spawned lines of real-life restaurants, bars, and alcoholic beverages. The singer stated that the characters and destinations in the online game are based off his life and experiences.

n other news, Twitter has reportedly been getting in trouble overseas lately. In the most recent turn of events, an unidentified British celebrity who goes by the initials “CTB” is suing the social network for issuing public information about an alleged affair with a reality TV star. This particular celebrity is thought to be an athlete, male, and supposedly put a block on having media report on his personal life.

One particular Twitter account posted a series of tweets revealing information about certain British celebrities, including CTB, that they had expressly demanded not be released through something called a super injunction. The super injunction is this weird vaguely legal mandate that celebrities issue which forbids media from reporting on something. Apparently Twitter is in violation of this act. A court ruling has yet to issue a legal standpoint on the matter.

Post-Microsoft acquisition, Skype crashes

VoIP and group video conferencing provider and latest buy of Microsoft, Skype has crashed, as users from across the world are citing sign-in and communication issues.

The Inquirer reported that Skype service crashed at about 12:15pm UK time.

Skype's response which was placed on Twitter read: "Some of you may have problems signing in to Skype and making calls. We're investigating and hope to have more details to share soon."

Soon another message said, "Thanks for your patience – we’ve identified the problem and will be rolling out a fix soon."

Engadget stated that the problem was not universal and the fault seemed to be in the latest version of Skype.

Highgate, Seba Inch Closer To Premier League

South Central Confederation champions Rivoli took the lead in the 37th minute through a Luke Soares goal.

But St Mary flag-bearers Highgate, the Eastern Confederation champions, kept their unbeaten run in the play-off series intact, courtesy of goals from Richard Orrett (43rd) and Roen Nelson (75th).

The result all but mathematically dashed Rivoli's hopes of returning to the country's top flight next season, as they remain bottom of the four-team series with just one point, with two rounds of matches remaining.

Highgate, in the meanwhile, now have eight points, and a win at home over Seba United on Sunday's penultimate round could be enough to earn them their first taste of Premier League football.

Western Confederation champions Seba, for their part, also took a step closer - in their home encounter at Jarrett Park later in the evening - with a 2-1 win over Kingston and St Andrew Football Association champs Cavalier, that pushed them up to eight points and joint leadership.

Torrey Samuels (12th) and Omar Reid (70th) netted the goals for the Montego Bay team, while Lawrence Richards (90+) scored for the losers.

Early leaders Cavalier, in the meanwhile, remained second from bottom on four points, after suffering their second consecutive loss.

Dwyane Wade rises to occasion, helps lead Heat’s stunning rally

Dwyane Wade goes to the basket
CHICAGO -- If Chicago-area native Dwyane Wade wanted anything more, it would be to knock out the team that he grew up cheering for in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals.
The Heat did not necessarily need Wade to have a big game to reach its first NBA Finals since 2006, but it wouldn’t have hurt.
After a sluggish overall game, it was Wade who ended up igniting an 18-3 finish, as the Heat prevailed 83-80.
Miami now returns to the Finals, and Wade got his wish.
Wade said before Game 5 that the Heat was just as desperate as the Bulls, and needed to play like it. And although he started out well with seven points in the first quarter, Wade looked more like he might have been waiting to get back to Miami for Game 6 with a chance to clinch at home.
“We’re desperate, too,” Wade said. “We didn’t work this hard to put ourself in this position, to be up 3-1, to not be able to match their energy and effort.”
Wade made a basket along with 5 of 6 free-throw attempts in the opening quarter, but his play fizzled from there. He scored just two points in each of the next two quarters. Wade was 1 for 5 from the field in the middle periods, as the Heat trailed the Bulls 45-38 at halftime and 62-57 after three.

Casey Anthony trial: Witness testimony continues after tense jury selection

Casey Anthony tears up in court
A central Florida mother charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter wiped away tears Thursday as her ex-boyfriend described to jurors affectionate moments Casey Anthony shared with her toddler.

Anthony Lazarro testified under questioning from Anthony’s defense attorney that she taught Caylee how to swim and regularly displayed affection for her daughter.

Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter. If convicted, she could be sentenced to death. She has pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys have offered strikingly different portrayals of Anthony.

Prosecutors have gotten witnesses to testify that Anthony never seemed upset during the time Caylee disappeared. Defense attorneys have coaxed witnesses to testify that Anthony was a loving mother.

Caylee was last seen June 16, 2008. Prosecutors said Caylee died from three pieces of duct tape being placed over her mouth and nose, while the attorney for Anthony, 25, has claimed the toddler accidentally drowned in her grandparents’ pool.

Review: HBO’s Too Big to Fail

On Monday evening, I sat down to watch “Too Big to Fail” — HBO’s adaptation of Andrew Ross Sorkin’s best selling book of the same name. Sorkin’s magnum opus does not attempt to explain why the crisis happened; but rather, detail the specifics of what happened. Day by day, bank by bank, the crisis is unveiled through the stories of various bankers, Fed and Treasury officials.

As a piece of entertainment, I strongly recommend it. It is a fantastic ensemble cast filled with terrific actors. William Hurt as Hank Paulson is simply riveting. James Woods turns Dick Fuld into a comtemptable, clueless jackass. Paul Giammatti plays Ben Bernanke with a viciously dry wit I did not know the Chairman possessed. The rest of the cast is every bit as good.

As someone who followed the crisis closely, the movie depiction of the parties involved gets the standard Hollywood over-simplification and glamorization. Its a ragtag team brought together to fight incredible odds against evil, uncontrollable forces. We should expect a mash up turning this into the Lord of the Rings any day now.

Jesse Eisinger makes the following wry observation about the film version:

“The movie is set up in the Hollywood conventional way: A gang of misfits, each with a special expertise, is brought together for an impossible mission. There’s Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, steely eyed at the moment of truth. There’s New York Federal Reserve head Timothy Geithner, the athlete (he doesn’t just jog, but also plays what appears to be squash). And then there’s Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, the professor with a heart of gold and secret knowledge of the Great Depression.

Ostensibly it’s a story of their success against all odds. Michael Kinsley, reviewing the movie in the New York Times, labeled Hank Paulson the “hero” of the account.

Except that the movie actually depicts something entirely different: failure upon failure. “Too Big To Fail” The Movie isn’t the story of how the Three Musketeers saved the global economy. It’s a story of how the three didn’t see the financial crisis coming; hadn’t prepared for it; made mistake after mistake as it was cresting; and then, in their moment of triumph, made their most colossal blunder of all.” (my emphasis)

In his Pro Publica article, Eisinger explains in far greater detail the subtext which the film almost inadvertently slips in.

I strongly recommend you see the movie; it is terrific entertainment. But I also suggest that afterwards, you plow through Eisinger’s full review — just so you understand what is fact and what has been fictionalized for your entertainment

Nancy Grace Hypnotized by Casey Anthony

If Nancy Grace wins an Emmy Award, will she have to share with it Casey Anthony, the accused "Tot Mom" murderer in Florida?
Every Nancy Grace Show on HLN is exactly the same. She talks about the Casey Anthony murder trial more than Maury Povich reveals if "Cinnamon" is really a man or a woman.
Each weeknight, we find Grace and four lawyers discussing what the "Tot Mom" wore in court that day. Grace and her guests say "tot mom" at least 30 times per show. I smell a T-shirt deal.
Grace beats up the "Tot Mom" and her defense team relentlessly. She's like Madame Defarge knitting in the courtroom in A Tale of Two Cities, only with weirder eyebrows.
Grace practically wears a hypodermic needle around her neck as costume jewelry. Call off the fight, ref!
The Nancy Grace Show is the Kramer portrait on Seinfeld — she is a loathsome, offensive brute. Yet I can't look away.

Tom Jones, Tim McGraw, the Kiss and More Highlights from the Idol Finale

It was an American Idol finale for the record books: Steven Tyler sang "Dream On," Jennifer Lopezand husband Marc Anthony shared a dance and a kiss on stage, country legends Tim McGraw and Carrie Underwood wowed, James Durbin got his happy metal ending with Judas Priest, Tom Jones showed the men of the top 13 how it's done and Haley Reinhart even sang a snazzy version of "Steppin' Out with My Baby" with Tony Bennett.

But the night belonged to Scotty McCreery, who took home the Idol crown.

"It was just a moment I will never forget," said McCreery, 17, of his win. "This was all about me being able to accomplish my dreams. I'm an American Idol. That was a huge dream. It's time for me to start my career. The real work begins."

Runner-up Lauren Alaina, who says she knew McCreery was going to win, had nothing but kind words for her fellow finalist. "It was God's plan for Scotty to get first," said Alaina, 16. "No matter what, that was the way it is supposed to be."

Though her voice was giving her trouble on the night of her final performances, the singer says it didn't affect the votes. "My voice had nothing to do with it. Things happen for a reason."

And what was the reason behind the smooch the two shared on stage?

"She stays true to her word," McCreery said with a chuckle. "She told me she was going to do that. It's all fun and games."

Video of Sir Tom Jones On American Idol

Tom Jones took to the Nokia Theater on Wednesday night for the American Idol Finale. The heartthrob was part of a medley with the 'Top 13' boys of American Idol. They switched off lyrics, sung his music and brought on the charm. With all the ladies in the audience cooing in downtown Los Angeles, there was no doubt the legend was making the ladies look and teaching the contestants a few moves to help later in life.

While Tom Jones was singing with the boys, Beyonce was singing with the girls. The once-of-a-lifetime experience for the idol contestants had the guys swaying to the cameras and sharing a moment with one of the biggest rock stars on the planet.

Usain Bolt Beats Asafa Powell In Rome

Usain Bolt beat Asafa Powell and everyone else in Rome today, running the 100 meters in 9.91 seconds, and solidifying his title as the world's fastest man one more time. And even when the races are close, he makes it all look so easy. That's part of the legend, of course. But it's also part of the problem.

Because when you really think about Usain Bolt's legacy, what's he leaving behind? He's the greatest sprinter of his generation, but it seems like he's more than that. There's a pretty good chance that's he one of the three or four most impressive athletes on the planet right now. It's not to say there's no glory in sprinting, but right now, Bolt's like dominant heavyweight without a challenger.
How many times can one man beat Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell before it gets old? You can watch his race over here, and it's impressive, but it still seems like we could have a cooler story here.
Plenty of people have talked about him jumping to the NFL, but that'd be insane. We want more Usain Bolt, we don't want dead Usain Bolt. Soccer, though? Bolt says he's interested. Just this week, he told reporters "I am a football fan for a lot of years now so for me I watch these guys playing, I think I can do a pretty good job. I think I could step up to the Rooneys, I think I could do well."
So maybe that's the answer. Even if he'd be awful, it'd be pretty amazing to watch him play soccer for a year. Just look at how dominant Thierry Henry's speed made him during his prime.

Boosting Good Cholesterol With Niacin Did Not Cut Heart Risks

A federal study testing prescription-strength niacin as an add-on to cholesterol-lowering statins to prevent heart disease was stopped early because the niacin didn't work. Plus, more patients taking the drug Niaspan had strokes than those who got a placebo. That potential safety issue was another factor in the decision to halt the study 18 months early, doctors involved with the research said in a media conference call Thursday.

Niacin is the most effective treatment for raising HDL, or good cholesterol. And the study aimed to find out if raising HDL and lowering triglycerides (another consequence of niacin treatment) in addition to using a statin to control LDL, or bad cholesterol, would lead to better outcomes for patients.

The answer: Niaspan didn't reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes. There were 5.6 such events per year for the group that got placebo compared with 5.8 per year for those who got Niaspan.

All of the more than 3,400 patients in the study took simvastatin, the cholesterol-lowering medicine sold under the brand-name Zocor. Some also got Zetia, another cholesterol-reducer.

The federally funded trial, called AIM-HIGH, was stopped because a scheduled review by an independent safety committee in April concluded the chances that the trial, started in early 2006, would ever show the expected benefit from niacin was less than 1 in 10,000. There was also that small but significant increase in stroke.

The results deal a blow to the so-called HDL hypothesis, which holds that raising good cholesterol should lower risk of heart disease. Epidemiological studies have suggested that's the case, but this test didn't bear it out.

Dr. William Boden, one of the lead investigators on the study, conceded the researchers were unable to show any additional benefit from raising HDL in patients whose bad cholesterol was controlled so well. Still, he didn't rule out the possibility of a positive HDL effect for different types of patients.

The Food and Drug Administration recommended no changes, for now, in the instructions or use of Niaspan. But the agency will analyze the data further.

Trial Stopped After Niacin Brings No Benefit to Heart Patients

May 26 (HealthDay News) -- Although early research had suggested that the nutrient niacin might raise levels of "good" cholesterol and thwart heart attacks, a major clinical trial has been stopped 18 months early because it has shown no such benefit.

The trial, sponsored by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and a drug maker, enrolled patients with a history of heart disease who had their LDL ("bad") cholesterol under control with statin medications. The new trial hoped to use niacin (also known as vitamin B3) to boost levels of "good" HDL cholesterol while lowering blood levels of fats called triglycerides to help reduce the odds of heart attack or stroke.

Unfortunately, "this study has ended 18 months early because we have answered the primary question," Dr. Susan B. Shurin, acting director of the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), said during a morning press conference Thursday. "While high-dose niacin raised participants' HDL cholesterol and lowered triglycerides, it did not affect the overall rate of cardiovascular events," she said.

"There was also an unexplained higher incidence of stroke in the high-dose niacin group, compared to the group on statins alone," Shurin added.

It is not clear if this trend toward stroke was merely a matter of chance, but it was a factor in the NHLBI's decision to stop the trial, especially in the face of a lack of benefit from niacin, she said.

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aware of the findings and is recommending no change in labeling or practice [regarding niacin], pending full analysis of the data," Shurin said.

Prior to the trial, some observational studies had shown that low HDL cholesterol was a risk factor for heart attack and stroke, so it was thought that any drug that could boost HDL might help patients. In addition, some studies had shown that low HDL plus high triglycerides boosted the odds of cardiovascular events.

In the trial, more than 3,400 patients averaging 64 years of age were randomly assigned to high-dose niacin or a placebo. Those in the niacin arm of the trial took Abbott Laboratories' Niaspan, a time-released form of niacin that contains a much higher dose of niacin than is found in over-the-counter supplements.

All of the participants also took the cholesterol-lowering statin drug Zocor (simvastatin).

As expected, participants who took Niaspan for the 32 months of the trial saw their blood levels of HDL cholesterol rise and their triglycerides lower, compared with those who took a statin alone.

But the boost in HDL failed to translate to any reduction in heart attacks or strokes, the team said. Nor did it lower the rate of hospitalizations for heart disease or procedures to open blocked cardiac arteries, according to the NHLBI.

Worse, more people taking niacin had strokes than those on a statin alone, the researchers found. In fact, 28 participants taking Niaspan suffered strokes, compared with 12 in the placebo group. Nine of the strokes in the Niaspan group happened to participants who had stopped using the drug at least two months and up to four years before their stroke.

Earlier studies had not shown any connection between high-dose niacin and stroke risk, Shurin said. Why the uptick in strokes was seen in this study isn't clear, she said.

Shurin cautioned people who take supplemental niacin not to stop taking it. They might want to talk with their doctor, she said. But this study is no reason to change what they are doing.

Bob Geren, Mike Scioscia on Buster Posey

A couple of old catchers weighed in on the drastic hit on Buster Posey last night.

"Very unfortunate," Oakland's Bob Geren said. "You hate to see anybody on any team get injured like that. He's a special player. I just wish him the best with his recovery. I never met him in my life, but he's a heck of a player and seems like a great kid."

The collision hit home with Geren, who said, "I've got a young catcher (Kurt Suzuki), and my two kids catch, So I know it's a dangerous position. You just do the best job you can mechaniclly to try to avoid injuries. It's part of the job. It's a tough position."

Asked about the biggest collision involving him, Geren recalled getting knocked down by Ken Caminiti in a game in San Diego.

"Nothing obviously like that," he said, referring to the Posey hit. "I had a bad neck for a while. A little whiplash. I tried to play through it and couldn't turn my head all the way to the pitcher. I dropped a nice oh-fer. Then again, I could've done that with a good neck."

Geren threw praise at Angels manager Mike Scioscia, calling him the "most amazing plate-blocking, collision-taking catcher of all time, in my mind."

Geren added Scioscia had "great technique and was a very tough guy."

Amid talk, some from Bruce Bochy, that MLB could alter the rules to prevent extreme home-plate collisions, Scioscia spoke of a code between runner and catcher about what's acceptable or what's not: "Ninety-nine percent of the time, it's the adrenaline of the runner knowing he can score a run and the catcher knowing he can stop a run that leads to these."

He added, "When something like this happens, it's unfortunate, but I don't know if there's enough there to rewrite the rulebook."

Scioscia recalled the most violent collsion in his career -- getting hit by Chili Davis.

"He hit me like a linebacker on a blitz," said Scioscia, recalling a separated shoulder -- not his but Davis'.

"I was down and woozy," he said. "It was a third out. I just wanted to make sure I got to the right dugout. I thought I rolled the ball to the mound. I guess it rolled toward the first-base coach's box."

Mike Miller playing through week-old daughter’s illness

Mike Miller was a big part of the Miami Heat’s Game 4 win against the Chicago Bulls Tuesday night, scoring 12 points—nine in the fourth quarter on 4-for-4 shooting—and grabbing nine rebounds off the bench. He did that despite dealing with a ruptured tendon in his left thumb. But what makes the performance even more remarkable is that he has the health of his week-old daughter on his mind.

Miller’s daughter, Jaelyn, is intensive care with an unspecified complication and has been in the hospital since she was born. Her condition may require surgery, according to the Miami Herald.
Miller traveled to Chicago with his team for tonight’s Game 5.
Miller said he went to see Jaelyn in the hospital after Tuesday night’s game and that he stayed with her until 4:00 a.m. He also wore pink shoelaces in her honor during Game 4, and Heat president Pat Riley said he would foot the bill if the NBA fined Miller for a uniform violation, the Herald reported.
“As important as the playoffs or the Eastern Conference finals are to me, the most important thing right now is her and my wife,” Miller said. “This kind of puts my thumb injuries in perspective.”
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has told Miller to take as much time away from the team as he needs to be with his family. Miller missed last Friday's practice but has since split time between his team and family, ESPN.com reported.
"We're here to support him through this," Spoelstra said. "He knows we're his family, too."

Skype down May 26: Service unavailable

Reports are there that Skype is down, along with their download servers. We have tried ours and all is fine, but millions of users around the world have reported thatservice is unavailable to them. Some have said that they cannot connect while others find that the softwareis crashing altogether.
As we are able to get online we thought that maybe it was a mistake, but Pocket-Lint is also having thesame issue. This is a serious problem for not only them but for you as well, as they use Skype to communicate with colleagues. However, the tech site has now learned that the outage seems to be only for Windows users, as those on Macs, Android or iOS devices are able to connect.
Skype is already aware of the issue, and has updated their Twitter feed saying that they are trying to resolve the issue. They did not give any indication as to what the issue was, or how long it is likely to take. We would suggest trying to connect to Skype on alternative to a Windows PC or laptop.

Movie actress Nadila Ernesta may face prison because of risque photos taken of her wearing a police cap.

Nadila's manager, Didi, refused to comment on the photos that have gone viral on the Internet over the last few days.

“I can't say anything yet. We are still looking for more information about those photos,” Didi told news portal Detik.com.

Nadila has starred in movies such as “Hantu Rumah Ampera” (“Ghost of Ampera House”) and “Miracle.”

On Monday, the National Police Spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bahrul Alam said the police would start investigating harassment allegations that had arised because of the photos.

“She can be charged with article 307 of the Criminal Code for harassing the police institution,” Anton said.

“We are so disappointed [with the photos] but we are still investigating if the photos were made on purpose or edited. It is possible that the photos were manipulated using a computer.”

Joplin begins sorting through the big tasks ahead

Thane Snider worked Wednesday in the yard of his childhood home in Joplin, Mo. A statue of St. Peter lay in the rubble as Snider looked for power tools to use in the tornado cleanup. JOPLIN, Mo. | St. John’s Regional Medical Center, ravaged by Sunday’s tornado, will be rebuilt, and Joplin schools plan to start on time in August. Volunteers by the thousands are pouring into the city to help with search and rescue, to clean up and care for the displaced.

Those were among the promising developments Wednesday. The death toll from Sunday’s EF5 tornado stands now at 125 with more than 900 injured, City Manager Mark Rohr said at an evening news conference. Tornado strength is measured by an enhanced F-scale rating from EF0 to EF5. An EF2 or higher is considered a significant tornado.

Rohr could not provide a number for people displaced or for those with no jobs to go to. As for the massive cleanup that waits, Rohr said officials were working on a plan, but could not provide specifics such as where the millions of tons of debris would go.

Power outages remain a problem. At last count, 14,000 customers were without electricity in Joplin, the Empire District Electric Co. said. About 10,000 of those were inside the tornado’s path of destruction, and they might be without service “for the foreseeable future,” the company said in a prepared statement.

'American Idol's' Steven Tyler: 'Lauren Alaina's been perfect'

During Tuesday, May 24's final performance show, Tyler again declared that he thinks the 16-year-old country crooner should win the crown, not 17-year-old Scotty McCreery. After Round 2, Tyler said Lauren won both rounds because she is "prettier" than Scotty. (It's not like this is a singing competition or anything! And it's not like he's being paid to critique their vocals or anything!) After Round 3, he said Lauren is his American Idol and thinks America will feel the same way.

At the press conference after the big show, Tyler explained why Lauren is his American Idol and what he saw in her from the beginning: "When I first heard Lauren, seven months ago, it was the second city. You have to go through so many kids and she sang. She doesn't even try to hit the notes, the words just go to that place. Everybody else is trying to hit the notes and she's never had a problem with pitch. Maybe bad songs, but she's been perfect and right and great," he said. "I circled her months ago and said 'American Idol.' Her and about six or seven others, but I heard her first. I mean, how does a 15-year-old sing like that? How does that happen. That's magic, that's the gift and that's what we're looking for."

Murder trial witnesses say they saw no change in Casey Anthony's behavior

One month after prosecutors say a Florida mother murdered her two-year-old daughter and left the body in garbage bags in a wooded area, she invited an acquaintance to the toddler’s upcoming birthday party, an Orlando courtroom was told Wednesday.

The mother, Casey Anthony, continued to suggest for weeks after the alleged murder that her daughter, Caylee, was staying with a nanny or that she had to leave soon to pick the little girl up.

“She said she had to pick up her daughter.… She said that her birthday was the next month and I was invited to her birthday party,” said Jamie Realander in testimony Wednesday, the second day of Ms. Anthony’s expected two-month murder trial in an Orlando courtroom.

"Dancing with the Stars" winner: Hines Ward wins the Super Bowl of dancing

Hines Ward and Kym Johnson pose with their trophies after they were named "Dancing with the Stars" champions on May 24, 2011.
Hines Ward and professional partner Kym Johnson took home the mirrorball trophy on Dancing With the Stars Tuesday night. Here are five things you may not know about Ward:
1. Ward, 35, is the wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He's played on the Steelers longer than any of his teammates. He was drafted in 1998. He was voted MVP of Super Bowl XL. He played in college at the University of Georgia.
2. He was born in Seoul, South Korea to a Korean mother and African American father. He grew up near Atlanta.
3. His position in the NFL draft was affected because he's missing his ACL in his left knee, according to Yahoo! sports. In fourth grade, he broke his kneecap after a bicycle accident and doctors never accounted for the ligament.
4. He currently lives in Sandy Springs, Georgia and has a son named Jaden with his ex wife, Simone.
5. He has two tattoos: One of Mighty Mouse in the Heisman pose on his upper right arm, and another of his name written in Korean.

Kim Kardashian To Wed NBA Star Kris Humphries

Kim Kardashian engaged to Kris Humphries

New Jersey Net, Kris Humphries, is officially joining the Kardashian clan. The basketball star proposed to Kim at her Los Angeles home on bended knee surrounded by rose petals, which spelled out his desire for her hand in marriage. How could she refuse when he was holding a 20.5 carat diamond ring in his hand? Fortunately, she didn’t and the couple is planning to marry, in what will assuredly be a lavish event, during the summer.

The couple has been dating for the past 6 months and the Kardashian’s will certainly be pleased to add another athlete to their family. Especially one that can afford a $2 million Lorraine Schwartz ring, Kim explained her reaction saying “I was in such shock. I didn’t expect this at all. My hand was shaking as he put the ring on my finger – shaking! I was so excited.” It’s been speculated that Kris may not have paid for the entire ring himself and that the E! Network helped out. Kim’s reality show with her sister Kourtney “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” has been a hit for the network and Ryan Seacrest, who is the executive producer of the Kardashian reality show programming. A wedding should keep the ratings nice and high for the cable channel.

Ryan Giggs : Imogen Thomas Scandal hangs over Man United

The Ryan Giggs imbroglio consumed England for the second straight day Wednesday, casting a long shadow over the upcoming Champions League final — the biggest match in European club soccer — against Barcelona (Saturday, 2 p.m. ET, FOX) and having a profound impact on British politics.

Giggs, one of the most popular and successful players in British history, is alleged to have consorted with a reality TV show contestant named Imogen Thomas. In and of itself, this would merely make for sordid tabloid fare and an awkward conversation around the married Mr. Giggs's dining room table. What made this story explosive is that Giggs apparently sought a controversial gagging order, called a "super-injunction," to prevent newspapers from reporting this. Monday, he saw that order shattered by a Member of Parliament.

The case has riveted the chattering classes and led to some ugly scenes in Manchester on Tuesday night. Journalists were attacked by masked men outside Giggs’ home, with some cars being damaged in the process. At Carrington, a frosty Sir Alex Ferguson attempted to ban The Associated Press' Rob Harris, who had asked a straight-forward question about the midfielder in an open press conference.

Sky Sports cameras and microphones caught Ferguson asking press secretary Karen Shotbolt who the questioner was and then saying, “Aye, then we’ll get him. Ban him on Friday.” Several journalists who attempted to ask Giggs’ teammates about the affair also had their interviews abruptly terminated.

Five Reasons The Rapture Did Not Occur

The Rapture is a belief among some Christians that they'll be godnapped to Heaven with little to no warning. Preacher Harold Camping predicted an earthquake would commence this prank on May 21, 2011. His ministry has raised millions of dollars by telling people they will soon have no need for millions of dollars.
  • The Rapture did not occur because the Rapture will not occur
  • False prophecy
  • Nobody knows when the Rapture will happen
  • There are no dead people in the clouds
  • There will be no Rapture without zombies
Upstanding citizens often confuse decent respect for a belief's existence with respect for its validity. There's a thick line in society blocking polite people from calling most ideas crazy, drawn at the intersection of those ideas' popularity and how big a knob they make you.

We found that Pet Rock was considered stupid but not crazy.

As you can see, there's a wide, and long-recognized gap between awaiting the Rapture and trying to raise money from it. But even the former deprives yourself. Most people bang the drum until they can't hear the band change its tune. The notion of being evaporated without notice was a hot idea to people in the 1600s, when the only hobbies were collecting different strains of pox and dancing the hey-nonny in puffy leggings. But you live in the 21st century -- an era of air conditioning, vaccines, and, need I remind you? Sofia Vergara. No matter how bad things get, there's more to discover, experience, and eat (unless your problem is famine). It's a rich world, and you have no reason to want to escape it, unless...oh my God, she's never coming back.

TV Ratings: 'Dancing' finale, 'Bachelorette' premiere help ABC rule Monday

TV Ratings: 'Dancing' finale, 'Bachelorette' premiere help ABC rule Monday
Ashley of 'The Bachelorette'

Fast National ratings for Monday, May 23, 2011.
ABC got huge Monday numbers for the "Dancing with the Stars" finale performances, leading into solid (but significantly less huge) premiere numbers for Ashley Hebert's debut as "The Bachelorette." That was enough to easily carry ABC past FOX's "House" and "Chicago Code" finales.
Meanwhile, reduced competition helped "The Chicago Code," "The Event" and "Law & Order: Los Angeles" all get big Monday bumps for new episodes.
Among adults 18-49, ABC averaged a 3.4 rating for the night, comfortably beating the 2.6 rating for FOX in the key demographic. CBS' 1.8 rating followed, with NBC's 1.4 rating good for fourth. The CW was last with a 0.2 rating.
Overall, ABC averaged an estimated 13.56 million viewers and an 8.7 rating/14 share for the night. That was far ahead of the 4.9/6 and nearly 8 million viewers for FOX and the 4.1/6 and 6.32 million viewers for CBS. NBC's 3.1/5 and 4.94 million viewers finished fourth. The CW was last with only 595,000 viewers and a 0.4/1.
8 p.m. - The first part of the "Dancing with the Stars" finale drew 22.15 million viewers and a 4.6 rating among adults 18-49 for ABC in the 8 p.m. hour, far ahead of what "Dancing" did in the same hour last week. FOX's "House" finale averaged 8.9 million viewers and a 3.3 demo rating, negligibly up from last week in viewers and down from last week in the demo. CBS' repeats of "How I Met Your Mother" averaged 4.39 million viewers, edging out the 4.3 million viewers for NBC's "Minute to Win It." The CW's repeat of "90210" averaged 674,000 viewers.
9 p.m. - Although it squandered heaps of its lead-in, "The Bachelorette" kept ABC in first for the 9 p.m. hour with 10.21 million viewers and a 2.9 demo rating. CBS' repeats of "Two and a Half Men" and "Mike and Molly" averaged 7.63 million viewers. FOX's "Chicago Code" got a finale bump with 7.03 million viewers and a 2.0 demo rating in third. Also rising for its finale was NBC's "The Event," which went up to 4.57 million viewers and a 1.5 demo rating. [Both "Chicago Code" and "The Event" weren't renewed by their respective network, but both continue to hold hope of outside reprieve.] The CW's "Gossip Girl" repeat averaged 516,000 viewers.
10 p.m. - "The Bachelorette" remained in first for the 10 p.m. hour with 8.33 million viewers and a 2.7 demo rating. CBS' "Clash of the Commercials" was second with 6.96 million viewers. Third went to NBC's "Law & Order: Los Angeles" with 5.95 million viewers and a 1.4 demo rating, also way up from last week.
All ratings information comes from preliminary Fast National Nielsen data, which includes live and same-day DVR viewing. All numbers are subject to change.

Love It Or Leave It: Wendy Williams Wishes Demi Moore Hadn’t Married Ashton Kutcher

Wendy Williams, host of GSN’s new show, “Love Triangle,” holds what might be a kind of controversial opinion about celeb couple Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. Though she thinks they make a nice couple, she wishes Demi hadn’t married Ashton because, at the end of the day, she won’t be able to give him children of his own. Now, I am pretty sure Wendy does not have a second job as Demi’s OB-GYN, so I’m going to take her assessment of Demi’s current reproductive capabilities with a grain of salt. I also am pretty sure she doesn’t hold a third job as the couple’s marriage counselor and is thus privy to their discussions—or lack thereof—about having a baby. And I don’t think it’s fair for her to assume that just because Ashton is from the midwest, he must want to procreate. All that being said, Wendy’s judgments about the seemingly happy couple do bring up a subject that us lesser famous folks can discuss—would you commit to someone who didn’t share your views on having kids?

Be sure to watch “Love Triangle” weeknights at 7:00 p.m. EST /6:00 p.m. CST on theGame Show Network. [Love It Or Leave It]
