Japan earthquake and tsunami: what happened and why | World news | The Guardian
What caused the tsunami?
The most powerful earthquake recorded in Japanese history, magnitude 8.9. The tremors were the result of a violent uplift of the sea floor 80 miles off the coast of Sendai, where the Pacific tectonic plate slides beneath the plate Japan sits on. Tens of miles of crust ruptured along the trench where the tectonic plates meet. The earthquake occurred at the relatively shallow depth of 15 miles, meaning much of its energy was released at the seafloor.
How does the earthquake compare with others?
This was the sixth largest earthquake in the world since 1900, when seismological records began. The most devastating earthquake to strike Japan was in 1923, when a magnitude 7.9 tremor devastated Tokyo and Yokohama and killed an estimated 142,800 people. The Kobe earthquake in 1995 was a magnitude 6.9 and caused more than 5,000 deaths and injured 36,000 others. The earthquake that wrecked Christchurch in New Zealand last month was a magnitude 6.3 event. Around 30 times more energy is released as the magnitude of an earthquake increases one unit, for example from magnitude 8 to 9.

On March 23, in Washington, DC, the Institute for Transnational Arbitration and the American Society of International Law will co-host a conference on “Fault Lines in International Commercial Arbitration.”
Building on the American Law Institute’s draft Restatement of the U.S. Law on International Commercial Arbitration, Gary Born, Jan Paulsson, J. William Rowley, QC, Linda Silberman, and Judge Diane P. Wood will discuss controversial themes that have emerged in the course of the drafting process. These include: (1) How National Is International Arbitration?; and (2) The Limits of Party Autonomy.
Although the themes for the conference may have an abstract tone, they encompass a host of issues relevant to anyone practicing in the field. Take the first theme, which one could easily reframe as “How International Is National Arbitration?”
Assuming that one drafts a national Restatement on an international topic, should the process aim to record the existing specificities of national practice, or to facilitate their subordination to international norms? To the extent that one aims to bridge gaps between national and international norms, should one focus on elimination of the most unusual local practices, which the draft Restatement does by rejecting (1) the application of forum non conveniens to enforcement proceedings, and (2) the use of “manifest disregard of the law” as a judicially created ground for vacating awards under § 10 of the Federal Arbitration Act (FAA)? See RESTATEMENT (THIRD) OF THE U.S. LAW OF INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION § 5-21(a) (Council Draft No. 2, 2010) (“An action to enforce a Convention award is not subject to . . . dismissal on forum non conveniens grounds.”); RESTATEMENT (THIRD) OF THE U.S. LAW OF INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION § 4-11E, ALTERNATIVE C (Preliminary Draft No. 4, 2010) (“A court may not vacate a U.S. Convention award for manifest disregard of the law.”).

KV, Makena And Preemies: Does FDA Approval Mean Monopoly?
Retroactive Drug Monopoly Raises Rates From $10... To $1,500 | Techdirt
A bunch of you have been sending in the somewhat horrifying story of how KV Pharmaceutical has been retroactively granted a monopoly on the drug Makena, which is use to prevent premature births. The product has been on the market for years, and normally costs about $10 per dose... but thanks to the new monopoly, the price is immediately jumping up to an astounding $1,500 per dose -- and this is something that many pregnant women need around 20 doses of during their pregnancy. That increases the overall price from about $200 to $30,000. For something that's been on the market for years. I'm reminded of Thomas Macaulay's famous statement:
"the effect of monopoly generally is to make articles scarce, to make them dear, and to make them bad."Tragically, many obstetricians and the March of Dimes had vociferously supported this move, without understanding the basic economics of monopoly pricing. They thought that granting a monopoly to one company would mean that it would make the drug "more available." Joke's on them, and now they're upset:
"That's a huge increase for something that can't be costing them that much to make. For crying out loud, this is about making money," said Dr. Roger Snow, deputy medical director for Massachusetts' Medicaid program. "I've never seen anything as outrageous as this," said Dr. Arnold Cohen, an obstetrician at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. "I'm breathless," said Dr. Joanne Armstrong, the head of women's health for Aetna, the Hartford-based national health insurer. Doctors say the price hike may deter low-income women from getting the drug, leading to more premature births. And it will certainly be a huge financial burden for health insurance companies and government programs that have been paying for it.It's really amazing that people don't understand the basics of monopoly pricing and how drastically it has distorted the market for drugs. Hopefully this story of Makena will get some people to wake up as to why this is a massive problem. Via Retroactive Drug Monopoly Raises Rates From $10... To $1,500 | Techdirt
UCLA Basketball Roundup: Too Cool Bruins Get Frozen Out of Pac-10 Tournament
So far this year, UCLA had been able to accomplish their goals: get to the tourney, compete for the Pac-10 title, never get blown out, fought if not for 40 minutes in every game, play good defensive, improve, etc. It was pretty obvious that once they got the tournament bid locked up, they stopped playing, starting with the first half in the Washington State game. That game, UCLA came back, against a shorthanded group of Cougars, only after CBH told them they weren't in the tournament yet. Tonight they decided to take the night off (emphasis mine):
"They had the mentality that they didn't have anything to lose," UCLA forward Tyler Honeycutt said. "We came in here with a 'too cool' of an attitude."The nonchalance resulted in another sluggish start and possibly the most mortifying moment of Coach Ben Howland's UCLA tenure, when the Bruins received a technical foul in the first half for having six players on the court after a timeout. "That was embarrassing," Howland said. "That right there was like indicative of the night. That that could actually happen is unbelievable." . . . "Just started from warmups," said Honeycutt, who scored 19 points but was the only Bruin in double figures. "Guys weren't taking, like, game shots, weren't really being focused."These guys need to look at the "old guys." They need to learn that what they did Thursday night was uncool, embarrassing and shameful to the Bruin tradition and to themselves. And most of all there is no excuse. You want to be good, you don't take nights off, shoot AA does not take summers off.
Afflalo is a new kind of ambassador for the Nuggets, an edgy outfit that former general manager Mark Warkentien used to compare to a pack of "stray dogs." Chris "Birdman" Andersen once said of these Nuggets:Or how about Kevin Love. Does he take nights off when the game is "hopeless" or "meaningless"?"We may not lead the league in stats, but we do in tats." Afflalo has no ink, and more telling, he started watching game tape when he was 8, woke his father in the middle of the night to spot him on the bench press when he was a teenager, and left his beachfront apartment in Los Angeles last July because he wanted to go back to work in Denver. He is a straight shooter, in every sense, who embodies the intensity and concentration that the Nuggets often lacked.
He got his record 52nd consecutive double-double fast (in the middle of the second quarter with a free throw) as his Timberwolves were blowing out the Indiana Pacers. . . . He has been consistent and worked hard on a team that needed this kind of production. He has had chances because the Wolves are so bad — they are now 12-40 during the streak — but he took advantage of it.
KL never stops working when even when his team is 12-40, AA never stops working even when it is July. This team quit the second they were in the Big Dance because they were "too cool."

Meet Me at La Tomatina, The World’s Biggest Food Fight
I always have a list of places I want to go, usually because I have a friend I’d like to visit or because I’ve heard a place is really nice. But I also have a list of travel things I want to *do*.
For example, I’d like to celebrate New Year’s in Times Square, check out a viking festival in Iceland and learn to surf in Australia.
(I did take a surf lesson in Byron Bay once. It was a disaster, but it was long enough ago now that I’ve deluded myself into thinking that if I tried it again, I would be a natural.)
La Tomatina in Buñol, Spain has been at the top of my must-do list for a while now. It’s a massive food fight held on the last Wednesday of August every year.
You may have guessed from the name that the food being flung in this fight is tomatoes – more than 100 tons of them. It’s messy, crazy and incredibly fun – at least according to the friends I’ve talked to who have been there.
This year my Aussie friends have decided to go back for more flinging, and I’m joining them! Woo hoo! Tips on how to best do La Tomatina are welcome, and I can’t wait to share my experience with you.
Sure, there are other traditional events I could enjoy in Spain, but given the choice between running with bulls who might make big holes in me or having shirtless men cover me in tomato goo, I’ll take the goo.

Santiago - The tsunami generated by Japan's massive earthquake reached the west coast of South America late Friday, but caused little initial damage.
The wave traveled nearly 16,000 kilometers to the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador and Chile's famed Easter Island. Minor flooding was reported in the Galapagos, but only higher waves were recorded on Easter Island, authorities said.
In Ecuador, more than 260,000 people were evacuated as a precaution, and in Chile tens of thousands of residents in low-lying areas were brought to safety. Authorities also issued alarms in Colombia and Peru.
The magnitude-8.9 earthquake struck north-eastern Japan Friday, unleashing a tsunami and leaving more than 1,000 people believed dead. Tsunami warnings were issued across the Pacific.

The Haiti Earthquake was a 7.0 on the Richter logarithmic scale. There is no extent stretch on the scale. in comparing the Haiti trembler to those conflicting history, the largest trembler ever was in Chile with a 9.5 on the Richter scale. The most ultimate trembler in San Francisco (1989 Loma Prieta) was also a 7.0 earthquake. The Resulting damage is more damaging in Haiti due to make up impression and the epicenter location.

Do not Let Time Change Disrupt Your Sleep Patterns - Drugs.com MedNews
FRIDAY, March 11 -- Worried that your sleep patterns will be disrupted when the clocks move ahead one hour this weekend? The key is getting enough zzz's in advance, says one sleep expert.
First, make sure you're well rested before the switch to daylight savings time on March 13, advises Dr. Aparajitha Verma, medical director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the Methodist Neurological Institute in Houston.
One way to do that is to start changing your sleep habits in the days before the time change; for example, start getting up and going to sleep an hour earlier, Verma said.
You can also take a nap on Sunday afternoon if you feel you need to and you have the time. But avoid napping within a few hours of your regular bedtime because that could disrupt your nighttime sleep, she added.
As you try to adapt to the time change, remember that certain persistent problems may indicate a more serious sleeping disorder. These include: remaining awake after 30 minutes of trying to go to sleep; excessive daytime sleepiness; or sleeping for seven or more hours and waking up tired.
If you experience such problems, you may want to consider participating in an overnight study at an accredited sleep study center, Verma said.
Don't Let Time Change Disrupt Your Sleep Patterns - Drugs.com MedNewsNFL Lockout Deadline: Clock Ticks Down On Labor Talks For Owners & Players
WASHINGTON — Unable to decide how to divvy up $9 billion a year, NFL owners and players put the country's most popular sport in limbo Friday by breaking off labor negotiations hours before their contract expired.
The union decertified, and 10 players, including MVP quarterbacks Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, sued the owners in federal court, putting the NFL on a path to its first work stoppage since 1987.
Despite two extensions to the collective bargaining agreement during 16 days of talks overseen by a federal mediator – and previous months of stop-and-start negotiating – the sides could not agree on a new deal. The league said it hadn't decided as of Friday evening whether to lock out the players, who, meanwhile, went to court to request an injunction to block such a move.
As was clear all along, the dispute came down to money. In the end, it appeared the sides were about $185 million apart on how much owners should get up front each season for certain operating expenses before splitting the rest of the revenues with players – a far cry from the $1 billion that separated the sides for so long.
But the NFL Players Association refused to budge any further without getting detailed financial information for each team.
"I would dare any one of you to pull out any economic indicator that would suggest that the National Football League is falling on hard times," NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said. "The last 14 days, the National Football League has said, 'Trust us.' But when it came time for verification, they told us it was none of our business."
By dissolving and announcing it no longer represents the players in collective bargaining, the union cleared the way for class-action lawsuits against the NFL, which opted out of the CBA in 2008. The antitrust suit – forever to be known as Brady et al vs. National Football League et al – attacked the league's policies on the draft, salary cap and free-agent restrictions such as franchise-player tags.
Invoking the Sherman Act, a federal antitrust statute from 1890 that limits monopolies and restrictions on commerce, the players are seeking triple the amount of damages they've incurred. That means the stakes here could be in the hundreds of millions.
It could take a month for there to be a ruling on the union's injunction request, and antitrust judgments should take longer.

With spring right around the corner, most of the U.S. will be turning the clocks forward one hour in the wee hours of Sun., March 14, 2011. Fast forwarding the clocks, or “springing forward” may increase production and help pull you out of your seasonal affective disorder funk, but it could also be a detriment to your heart health. An article found online stated studies have found heart attacks had "increased significantly for the first three-week days after the transition to daylight saving time in the spring."
The reason? Sleep deprivation. It can have an adverse effect on cardiovascular health, and disrupt chronobiologic rhythms.
So what should you do? Get more sleep! Try to go to bed a little early each night to get you accustomed to the later hour, or allow yourself a nap on Sunday to try to recoup from the hour lost overnight Saturday.
If neither of those options sound good to you, you may want to become a new observer of National Nap Day on Monday, March 15, 2011.
