As half a million overjoyed Canadians gathered yesterday to catch a glimpse of William and his new bride Kate, fan Francine Dorion, 50, said: “She reminds me of Diana, she just steals you.”
Another said the visit reminded them of those the late princess made in the 80s and early 90s with Prince Charles and all the pomp and ceremony that went with it. The onlooker added: “We haven’t seen scenes like this since Diana came here.”
And in a touching moment as Kate and Wills left the carriage, a lone voice cried out “Happy birthday, Diana” to mark what would have been her 50th. Kate, 29, simply smiled, realising what the gesture would have meant to her husband.
The 29-year-old prince appeared calm and unruffled by the comment.
Kate mania swept Canada as the couple arrived in the capital Ottawa as part of their seven-city tour.
They rode together in a horse-drawn coach for the first time since their wedding.
