The Aussie actor will play Gale Hawthorne. The Hunger Games is the first in a trilogy of science-fiction novels set in the not-too-distant future, where young people are chosen by lottery to participate in a series of brutal televised games (think Battle Royale).
Hemsworth joins Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in the film, which is set for release next year.
The Hunger Games has been on the New York Times best seller list for more than 100 consecutive weeks.
