Costa Rica Earthquake Today, Terremoto Felt in Nicaragua

LOS ANGELES (LALATE) – Costa Rica was struck by a strong earthquake today, a terremoto that was felt in Nicaragua as well. Today’s Costa Rica earthquake was a sizable temblor, one of the strongest quakes to strike the region this year. Unlike stronger temblors that struck Costa Rica in 2010 out in the Ocean, today’s quake was centered on land in a relatively densely populated region.
Today’s earthquake in Costa Rica struck nearly one year after a sizable 6.2 quake rocked the country. That quake, in contrast to today’s temblor, was out in the Ocean, off of Parque Nacional Manuel Antonion, near PuertoQuerpos, Damas, y Pamita. Weeks earlier in 2010, a 5.0 earthquake also struck Costa Rica but felt in Panama; it wascentered closest to Golfito, Costa Rica and David, Panama.
Today’s earthquake was again centered close to San Jose, Costa Rica, roughly sixteen miles west of town. It was also less than eighty miles from San Carlos, Nicaragua and eighty-five miles from Limon, Costa Rica.
Friday’s terremoto comes daysafter Panama was struck by a strong earthquake, a temblor that was also felt in Costa Rica. That quake on April 30 was not centered on land but off the western coast. There are no reports of injuries yet announced by local noticias. Today’s earthquake was just east of the town of Cedro, and centered in the Parque Nacional Volcan Poas. The quake was west of highway 126 and north of highway 1. It was centered east of San Ramon and north of Alajuela.
