TV icon Mary Tyler Moore will undergo surgery to remove a brain tumor.

The TV legend and Oscar-nominated actress will go under the knife to remove a meningioma, or benign tumor on the lining of her brain, People reported yesterday. Meningiomas are extremely common and usually occur in older adults.

“At the recommendation of her neurologist, who has been monitoring this for years, and a neurosurgeon, Mary decided to proceed with this fairly routine procedure,” said her rep Alla Plotkin.

“The prognosis for meningioma removal is generally very successful, and much depends on the condition of the patient before surgery, and the size and location of the tumor,” Brooklyn Hospital’s Dr. Anders Cohen told US News and World Report. “The vast majority of patients do well and return to their former lifestyles.”

Despite the health issue, the “Mary Tyler Moore Show” star was in cheerful spirits yesterday when she made a surprise visit to the Rachael Ray Show to chat alongside her friend and former “Dick Van Dyke Show” co-star Dick Van Dyke.
