NES MP3 player and speakers

nes-mp3.jpg

Gamer Morte Moya put together an MP3 player from an old NES controller, and then took it a step further by making a speaker out of an NES game cartridge. He says:
“Some of you may have seen my NES Controller MP3 player. This is a companion project for it. I sometimes like to sit around and listen to music so I made these powered speakers. And since it was to go with the NES controller I made it in a NES cartridge. Now before you even read any further. These are not really loud. Just so you know. They are great for sitting at your desk, but you would not want to have them as music for a party or anything. Now you could make a larger more powerful amp, but I didn’t. Just FYI.”
First a computer mouse, and now an MP3 player and speakers? I'm excited to see what the future holds in the noble art of NES controller stuffing. I think if I try hard enough I might be able to fit my entire car into there.
More images and video of the NES sound system after the jump.

Meet Raspberry Pi: A Functioning $25 Computer That Fits in Your Pocket

Raspberry Pi, as David Braben has dubbed it, is a new computer the size ofa USB stick with some impressive hardware specs. How impressive?
Well, “it uses a 700MHz ARM11 processor coupled with 128MB of RAM and runs OpenGL ES 2.0 allowing for decent graphics performance with 1080p output confirmed. Storage is catered for by an SD card slot. It also looks as though modules can be attached such as the 12MP camera.”
It has an HDMI port to connect a monitor to and a USB port to connect a keyboard and mouse to. Oh, and it runs on the Linux distro Ubuntu.
All of that is to say that Raspberry Pi is essentially a tiny, fully functioning computer. And it will only set you back $25. No, that’s not amistake. You read it correctly. Twenty-five bucks.
Braben is a well-known videogame developer who runs the UK studio Frontier. They’ve released such popular games as Rollercoaster Tycoon series, Thrillville, Lost Winds , and most recently Kinectimals .
In his spare time, Braben has been trying to solve another problem: how to get young students excited about computers and more specifically, computer sciences like programming and hardware repair. Brabenreasons that computer learning has devolved into learning “useful skills such as writing documents in a wordprocessor, how to create presentations, and basic computer use skills.”
Mostly because schools can’t afford to buy computers for kids to tinker with. So, enter Raspberry Pi as a solution. The tiny computers, which Braben hopes to have available in the next 12 months, will be distributed (through the charitable foundation Raspberry Pi ) to students for free with the idea that courses on software programming and computer hardware architecture will develop around them.

Sister Wives Recap: Christmas for the Brown Clan Brings Mountains of Love!

“Sister Wives” is getting to the point where something is about to happen with the case against the Brown’s related to polygamy. They are being investigated on felony charges for living the polygamist lifestyle which they revealed several months ago on television in an act of “coming out.” Feeling it was the right thing to do in order not to have to live in fear of discovery always hiding who they are, they decided as a family to speak out and expose the marriage agreement they have chosen; it has proved less than accommodating overall with the loss of jobs, friends, and now pending charges which might rip the family apart.

Although at first it was uncomfortable to watch the lifestyle they have chosen, it has become abundantly clear this family is highly functional and very secure with happy children, loving parents, and an incredible support system. What is sad as they face the stress of not knowing what is going to happen is to be aware there are hundreds of thousands of families out there living “normal” lives which do not share what this family has and whose children are ten times less cared for in relationships far less harmonious than the ones presented in the Brown clan. It is disconcerting to see such struggles faced by these parents who only want the best for all of these children and are attempting to decide the right path to follow to ensure just that. At the same time, now the older children face disruption in their own life as Kody decides to move the family to another state for safety and anonymity.

War widow's pledge for Army wives

Afghanistan war widow Brenda Hale has made a heartfelt pledge to fight for other Army wives after she was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Choking back tears after her emotional victory in Lagan Valley, the mother of two said her husband, Captain Mark Hale, would have been proud.

"He would be very proud of me, but not surprised," she said. "He always knew I had a voice, he had to listen to it."

Capt Hale, 42, from Bournemouth, Dorset, died in an explosion in Sangin, Helmand province, in August 2009, while helping his colleagues who were caught in a roadside blast. The battle group logistics officer, who looked after troops suffering post-traumatic stress, was serving with the 2nd Battalion The Rifles, based at Ballykinlar in Co Down.

Ms Hale said he laid down his life for his friends and she was inspired by him to run for election after campaigning for better treatment of army widows.

Happy Mother's Day from Tina Fey!

Tina Fey returned to her old stomping grounds (six months pregnant and looking amazing), tohost the Mothers Day-themed episode of SNL . The highlights of the night were definitely mama-centric, starting with Tina's duet with Maya Rudolph , who's also preggo. This exchange during the song pretty much sums up every mother's fear for her future child:
Maya: "Promise me baby, if you're a lady, don't move in with Charlie Sheen . Or whoever is Charlie Sheen at that future time."
Tina: "Probably still be Charlie Sheen. That son of a bitch is gonna live forever."
Later on in the show, SNL spoofed Bravo's Pregnant in Heels , a show about a company that caters to the high-demands of the rich and knocked up. Tina played a Jersey Shore -esque client who of course has crazy requirements for her big day: "I want to have a water birth, but instead of water I want DietCoke."
So do we, Tina. So do we. Happy Mother's Day, everybody!

PBS kids show goes interactive

For years, the classic children's show, "The Electric Company" opened with the signature line, "Hey you Guuuuuys!"
That was the verbal cue for school-age kids to gather around the television for some sketch comedy built around developing reading skills.
Now in the reinvented version of the much-heralded PBS show, that famous call is being used to lure kids to another screen — one in which they can create a digital version of themselves and become a character in the program they used to just passively watch.
The folks at Sesame Workshop — the non-profit educational organization that produces "The Electric Company" and its venerable forerunner "Sesame Street" — are calling this new marriage of television and Web a "transmedia experience."
"We are really letting the children be in the driver seat," said Erica Branch-Ridley, supervising producer of online content for "The Electric Company."
"The Electric Company," which aired for six seasons inthe 1970s with a cast that included big-name stars Bill Cosby and Rita Moreno, was revamped in 2009 with a new cast and a similar mission of building reading and math skills in kids age 6 to 9.
This third season of the new"Electric Company" begins airing today with episodes that will end with a two-minute animated segment. In the 12 mini-episodes, two animated versions of characters in the cast will battle a villain who is using a"wordsuckeruppernator" to steal all the words on Earth. Each episode ends in a cliffhanger, with the characters shouting the show's famous catch phrase and a narrator telling kids to log onto PBSKIDSGO.org/electriccompany, to join the adventure.
