For generations of school children, the Bunsen burner conjures up fond memories of practical experiments during science lessons. In honour of inventor Robert Bunsen's ongoing contribution to science, Google has today marked what would have been his 200th birthday with an animated tribute. The new 'doodle' shows a flame changing colour from blue to purple as various chemicals bubble brightly in pots and test tubes. Among his many achievements was discovering caesium and rubidium, alongside Gustav Kirchhoff, and pioneering photochemistry. But he will forever be remembered for developing the Bunsen burner with his laboratory assistant Peter Desaga in 1855 to study the colour spectrum of different heated elements.
