'Game of Thrones' casts fan favorite Brienne Actress Gwendoline Christie

This past week, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin revealed that on his blog that he is finishing up a draft of for a second season episode of the hit series. Now, Martin has teased fans with a cryptic message about upcoming casting for the show. After only a few short hours, diehard fans of the series were able to decipher the clue: Gwendoline Christie has landed the part of Brienne Tarth.

Christie, whose only credited role to date was in the 2009 film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus , stands at 6'3 and was the top choice by many fans of the novels and show to fill the part awarded to her. Here is a bit of background on the character:

Brienne Tarth is the only daughter and heiress of Lord Selwyn Tarth of Evenfall Hall; she had three siblings, none of which survived childhood. Larger and stronger than most men, Brienne is a skilled warrior and longs to be a knight. She has an awkward personality, but is also honest and stubborn. She holds a naïvely idealized notion of knighthood despite the insults she receives from many knights, who call her “Brienne the Beauty” to mock her ugliness. She is also known as “Brienne, the Maid of Tarth”, but her most common and neutral nickname is “Brienne of Tarth”, as she is both from the House and island of Tarth.

Police: Suspect in deadly Michigan shooting spree commits suicide; hostage standoff over

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — A gunman opened fire in two Michigan homes Thursday, killing his daughter, ex-girlfriend and five other people before leading police on a high-speed chase and taking hostages inside a stranger's home.

The five-hour standoff ended when he killed himself as authorities were telling him how to surrender.
The hostages were released unharmed, and 34-year-old Rodrick Shonte Dantzler died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.
The manhunt for Dantzler began earlier in the day after four people were found dead in one Grand Rapids home and three were discovered in another across town. Two of the dead were children.

Dantzler, 34, who was armed with a handgun, had earlier released another hostage, a 53-year-old woman, after demanding a sports drink and cigarettes, according to police.

Dantzler had allegedly carried out a shooting rampage at two other homes in which he killed a 10-year-old child, five women and a man. Police said he had a personal connection to the houses, without elaborating.
Police then pursued him through the city on a high-speed chase to a house where he had no apparent personal connection. There he abandoned his vehicle, fired three shots, which were answered by police, and then holed up inside.
In addition to those he killed, Dantzler also shot two people during his rampage, including a woman likely caught in crossfire and another person the suspect struck with his car, according to Belk.

Jaycee Dugard: I Stayed with Captor to Keep my Kids Safe

Jaycee Dugard endured an abduction and 18 years of sexual slavery at the hands of Phillip and Nancy Garrido.

Now, the 31-year-old Californian has written a memoir, "A Stolen Life," detailing her ordeal.

In the book, set for release July 12, Dugard vividly describes the years of sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of Garrido since being kidnapped at age 11 at a school bus stop on June 10, 1991 – and the moment, three years later, that she first realized he had impregnated her.

"Easter Sunday 1994," she writes. "Phillip says there is something he needs to talk to me about. He and Nancy have noticed that I'd been putting on weight and waddling instead of walking. I said I know.

"They said, 'We think you may be pregnant. I was stunned and scared...how can I possibly raise a baby in this place?"

That baby was the first of two children, now ages 16 and 13, she had by him.

While kept concealed behind the Garrido's home in Antioch, Cal., Dugard recalls first being physically restrained to keep her from running to freedom. The emotional restraints came next.

"Phillip gave me this image of the world as a scary place made up of pedophiles and rapists...one of the reasons I stayed was I wanted my kids to be safe," she writes.

The book, highlighted on TODAY Thursday and excerpted in next week's issue of People magazine, hits stores a month after Dugard's captors faced their crimes in court; Phillip Garrido was sentenced to 413 years in prison and his wife was sentenced to 35 years to life.

Texas executes Mexican national despite plea from Obama and others

Texas executed a Mexican national over objections from President Barack Obama's administration that the action would violate international treaty obligations and put US citizens abroad at risk.

In a case that garnered international attention, the US Supreme Court rejected a last-minute stay of execution on the grounds that Humberto Leal Garcia was not told of his right to diplomatic counsel when arrested.

Leal Garcia, 38, was pronounced dead after he was given a lethal injection at a prison in Huntsville, Texas.

Leal Garcia, who had lived in the United States since he was an infant, was convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl and bludgeoning her to death with a piece of asphalt in 1994.

In a last statement provided by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, Leal Garcia apologised to the victim's family and asked for their forgiveness.

"I truly am sorry. That is all. Let's get this show on the road," Leal Garcia said, according to the transcript. "One more thing, Viva Mexico Viva Mexico."

The Obama administration warned that executing Leal Garcia would violate the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and leave US citizens travelling abroad at higher risk of arrest without cause or denial of diplomatic representation.

Shrinking Belly Ad Are Conning Consumers, FTC Alleges

Those online ads showing a shrinking waistline and offering “1 Tip for a Tiny Belly” have linked to some diet companies that are conning consumers, the Federal Trade Commission has alleged.

Independent promoters sell the ads to companies hawking diet products made from foods such as acai berries and African mangoes, as well as a human hormone known as hCG, the Washington Post reports. The FTC has filed 10 lawsuits against the acai berry marketers claiming deceptive advertising, but has taken no action against the other marketers.

People who click on the belly ad are led to fake diet or news sites that feature articles claiming to investigate diet claims, the Post says, citing FTC allegations. Reviews are favorable, as people claiming to have used the products rave about the results. People reading the claims are then directed to a website, where they can order “trial samples” of the products.

The FTC has alleged in the acai berry suits that the news sites aren’t legitimate and the weight loss claims can’t be substantiated. Consumers who don’t read the fine print won’t realize that they will be regularly charged for new shipments of the product until they manage to call a toll-free number and endure the time-consuming cancellation process, the FTC says.

The Post says one company tried to protect itself with this fine print on a fake news page: “This website, and any page on the website, is based loosely off a true story, but has been modified in multiple ways including, but not limited to: the story, the photos, and the comments. Thus, this page, and any page on this website, are not to be taken literally or as a non-fiction story.”

Four Reasons Businesses Should Start Using Facebook Video Chat

Facebook held a media event Wednesday morning to unveil 'something awesome'. That something awesome is that Facebook is adding a group chat feature, and the ability--in partnership with Skype--to conduct video calls from within Facebook.


1. You are already there.
2. They are already there.
3. Saves time and money.
4. The price is right.

Facebook video chat is limited to one-on-one calls, unlike Google+ Huddles which allow for group video chat, or even group simultaneous watching of YouTube videos. There are certainly some practical business applications for the group aspects of Google+. Hopefully, Facebook will continue to expand on the video chat concept and include a group video chat function at some point. What would really be cool is if Facebook, Google+, Skype, Apple FaceTime, and any other competing video chat platform could all get on the same page so they could all work together, but I won't hold my breath.

HOW TO: Launch Facebook Skype Video Chat [PICS]

You can now make video calls on Facebook, thanks to a new Skype-powered feature the social network launched Wednesday.

During the product announcement, Mark Zuckerberg described how his elderly neighbor in Palo Alto asked if he could to video chat his grandson on Facebook — without the hassle of setting up a new account or downloading a program. “Tune in,” Zuckerberg told him.

It’s not quite as seamless as Zuckerberg’s neighbor was hoping, however. The first time you try to video chat someone or answer a call, you will indeed be asked to download a program. The chat window will then ask you to select some Flash settings.
